Schengen visa and travel insurance costs: fees versus quotes

By Bishnu Prasad Dahal · checked 31 October 2026

One application fee, an individual insurance quote and a clear record of refundable travel payments.

For a standard adult short-stay Schengen application, the European Commission lists a €90 visa fee. Different rates, exemptions and waivers exist. An application through a visa service centre can carry an additional service fee. A quoted “visa package” should therefore be broken into its government and supplier components before you compare prices.

Insurance cover and its price are different numbers

The Commission lists travel medical insurance among the application documents, covering emergency care, hospital treatment and repatriation. The amount of insurance protection is not the premium you pay. Enter the premium from your actual policy quote in the insurance row; do not enter a policy’s coverage limit as an application expense.

Compare quotes on the same basis

Record the trip dates, travellers and destinations used in every quote. Read territorial coverage, benefits, exclusions, excesses and cancellation provisions. Ask the relevant authority and insurer about acceptance and requirements rather than relying on a low advertised starting price. This website does not sell policies, recommend an insurer or verify a policy’s suitability.

A transparent example

Assume the standard €90 adult visa fee applies to you, and your own quotes contain €28 for insurance and €25 for a service-centre charge. The three components total €143. The insurance and service-charge amounts are invented illustrations, not current quotations or average prices. Other costs may still apply.

If a policy would return €20 of that illustrative €28 premium following refusal, record the actual cash-refund amount through the row’s refund percentage. Do not assume an insurance refund also covers the application charge or a flight booking.

Several destinations do not mean several visa fees

A multi-country trip is not a reason to add the standard application fee once for every Schengen country on your itinerary. The destination route pages are alternative starting points for the relevant application, not cumulative charges. Confirm where and whether to apply with the competent authority.

Keep reservations and funds held separate

Include the amount actually paid for a reservation, not an unpaid booking total. Place a flight purchased only after approval at the later payment stage. Enter any financial-evidence balance separately from payments. Download the breakdown with the quote date so you can revisit the estimate if travel dates or cancellation terms change.
